    Lyrics
In an Appalachian hollow on the eastern side of Kentucky
Where tall oaks rise on dark and silent hill
Where generations stay and roots run deep
But the veins of coal run deeper still
In a coal mine town on the eastern side of Kentucky

In a coal mine dug in mountains of Kentucky
Working fifteen hour days in a three-foot high shaft
Sucking black poison; Breathing black air
Crawling back home, with our bodies bent in half
In a pretty little hollow in the eastern side of Kentucky

But when I get that Government check
Gonna buy a new house; gonna buy a new car
When I get that black lung money
Gonna leave this town; Gonna go far
From this lonely hollow on the eastern side of Kentucky

Well we lived our lives in a company driven town,
The company owned us all from the cradle to the grave
We bought all our food from the company store
But the company took what the company gave
To a little old hollow on the eastern side of Kentucky

It took away our lives and they took the heart of my town
They stole away our freedom and they robbed the town's own soul
To make some rich men richer, stealing from the ground
We sacrificed our bodies digging up their coal
From a ruined hollow on the eastern side of Kentucky

The dusty black life crushed some, for some of us it just was hard
Tough to have your dignity when you're just another tool
Each day another died, and they rang the bell
But who cared about a poor man who never went to school
In an isolated hollow on the eastern side of Kentucky

    Lyrics
    They made me a soldier
They made me fight their wars
They taught me to feel hatred
They made me feel such horror
    They made me watch violence
    'til my resistance wore
They forced me to shed blood
    Until my heart was torn

Oh I am a child soldier
    	Oh I carry a gun
Though in my heart I still seek love
I must seek it on the run

    I once had a family
I was free to be a child
    I once had a home
I still knew how to smile
    I once had a brother
We used to laugh and play
    I once had two sisters
    Those memories fade away

Please I don't want to kill.
Please I don't want to hate.
    	Please take away these guns
    	Before it is too late

One came and strove to free us
    One person showed us love
    He paid for my release
He brought peace like a dove
He came and gave us water
    He made the bloodshed cease
He gave us art and beauty
Even to the least of these

    Lyrics
I hear the sound of a loon call
In the woods I hear a tree fall
I hear the song of the hermit thrush
    The sound of traffic rush
I hear the sound of choirs sing
the sound of church bells ring
I hear the sound of the rain
Sometimes I hear the sound of pain

I'm clinging to the hope in the despair
As I try to figure just how much to care

I hear the sound of the earthquake
The sound of several million hearts break
And the sounds as the guns shoot
And the sounds as the mobs loot
I'm trying to listen to the grass grow
I'm trying to listen to the snow snow
I'm trying to listen to the river flow
I don't want to hear my loved ones go

I'm just trying to find the beauty in the pain
I'm trying to see the sunshine through the rain

I hear the voices of the stars
And voices in the pubs and bars
Voices of the empty and alone
Voices of the wind and stone
    I hear the hungry die
    I hear the children cry
I hear the voices of the doves
Sometimes I hear the voice of Love

      The siren's mournful wail
      The refugee's sad tale
      The playing of a flute.
      The biting of the fruit
The weeping as a bond breaks,
      The laughter of the snake

I feel the droning of the bees
I feel the creaking of the trees
I hear the sound of waves lap
I hear the sound of one hand clap

    Lyrics
    She's a secret message
    I've been trying to decode
    She is timed to self-destruct
    Wired to explode
And she'll take somebody with her
When she brings the fatal word
    Like a suicide bomber
    Her cause is undeterred

I'm trying to find a way
      to give her love
I'm trying to find a way
      to ease the pain
      Pain that she causes,
      she gives and she feels
I'm trying to find a way
      to break these chains

    She's a secret message
    from a double agent spy
any truth that she gives you
comes wrapped up in a lie
    I'm trying to understand her
    But we're so differently tuned
She's been written out in blood
    From a self-inflicted wound

Yes I'm trying just to make sense
Of the choices that she makes
    They defy all explanation
    They cause so much heartache
I don't know if she is guilty
I don't what was the crime
    I don't know if she's the victim
But she gets me every time

She's been crying out for help
She is desperate for some aid
    But she refuses every offer
    Of help that's ever made
    Her eyes are averted
    Her heart is in retreat
Seems like every day that passes
    She's further out of reach

    Lyrics
    Let's skip this fight
    Forget what we said
    No more angry words
    I'd rather dance instead
    I want no regrets
when it's time to go to bed

    Let's skip this fight
    Go walk beneath the moon
    Sit beside the stereo
    Listen to some tunes
    What's so important
That we choose to nourish these old wounds?

    	Love is more than feeling
    	Love is more than words
Your love is what I need right now
    	Love has the greatest worth

    Let's skip this fight
    Exchange it for a kiss
    Take our many crimes
    Cross them off our list
    I'd rather share your love
    Them simply coexist

    Lyrics
Tonight I went to sleep in an empty bed
Fullness of memories still pounding in my head
Memories of twenty years of love I gave to you
Of twenty years of promises always to be true

Twenty years of memories turned into trash
Twenty years of building burned into ash
Twenty years of tears I'm gonna have to cry
Twenty years I gave you at an end with one "goodbye"

I remember the day you put a ring on my hand
Memories of spoken vows over wedding bands
For twenty years and more toward your happiness I strived
Twenty years we spent together making one our lives

    We had times of joy
Though I know we had our tears
    We had times of hope
Though I know we had our fears
But you always had my faith
    You always had my heart
I never thought that you would leave
I never thought we'd be apart

I'm not above coming to you upon my knees
My heart has always been the lock
    You hold the key
